Our Homestead Project

As I have mentioned before in my other blog, Twin Lakes Seven, life has a way of inserting itself into our best laid plans. I had really thought that I would be well on my way in the construction of my very own Lotus Seven replica (AKA, a Locost Se7en) by now. Instead of building a hi-perf sportscar, I'm now in the process of building a "Granny Flat" for Carol (Granny) and myself (The Grandpa from Hell) to occupy.

When our son was discharged from the Marines, we invited him and his little family (wife & two kids) to come and live with us here in the Ozarks while they worked to get on their feet financially. Well, times being what they are, that may take a while. He is employed at a local supermart while working to get a business of his own up and running. Desiree' (Erik's wife) has tried to help by picking up what work she could here and there, but with a baby due in about 3 months her prospects are less than stellar. All of this was not totally unexpected, what with the economy being the way it is, but our little home that is comfortable for 3 or 4 is more than a little snug for 6. Add to that the fact that there is now a seventh on the way and Carol and I decided it was time for a change. We designed a cozy little apartment that could be built in our pole-barn garage (Yep, my garage/workshop pole-barn), and have started construction.

We broke ground on Dec. 12, spent the next few weeks stubbing in the plumbing, and poured our concrete slabs on New Years Eve. The slabs are for the bath and laundry rooms, as well as the new garage. The flat will be 930 sq. ft., and the garage will be 384 sq. ft., a long one-car. Although the garage is about half the size of the original one, it will still be more than adequate for the construction of the Locost.

Pics to follow.
